Are you ready to make a move?

Do not guess about your taxes or immigration status. Let's get it right the first time.

  • You must deposit at least €4,500 in your Dutch business bank account. Crucially, this amount must remain in your company's equity throughout your stay. It is not a one-time fee that can be paid immediately.

  • Yes, you can work for yourself and send out bills. You cannot be on the payroll of another  Dutch company.

  • The decision usually takes a few weeks to a few months after your IND appointment. However, getting an appointment can take some time. We recommend starting as soon as possible.

  • The DAFT does not require a point-based test, as the standard self-employment visa does. However, you must show a basic plan and, most importantly, an Opening Balance Sheet signed off on by a certified bookkeeper (which we provide).

  • Yes. Your spouse/partner and minor children may apply for residence permits as your dependents. Interestingly, depending on your visa status, your spouse may be able to work freely (even in employment) without requiring a separate work permit.

  • Not necessarily. You can register your business at your home address if your rental agreement or mortgage lender permits it. However, the IND and KvK do not generally accept "virtual offices" (Postbus only) as valid business addresses.

  • No. Initially, it is typically granted for two years. Thereafter, you can renew it (usually for another 5 years), as long as you still meet the requirements (such as maintaining the €4,500 equity). After 5 years of legal residency, you may qualify for permanent residency or citizenship.

Start your business in the Netherlands the right way.

The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) provides the best opportunity for US business owners and freelancers to live and work in Europe. It allows you to avoid the strict immigration rules that most other non-EU citizens must follow.

But getting the visa is just the first step. You need to deal with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK), the Immigration Service (IND), and the Tax Office (Belastingdienst) to stay in compliance.

Most providers only solve part of the problem:

  • Immigration lawyers help you get your visa but not your taxes.

  • Accountants handle the books but don't understand DAFT or US–NL treaties.

We at TaxDoctor offer the whole solution from start to finish.
